Designer Notes: Discipline XP

The Storyteller's Handbook (revised) has guidelines for older NPCs on page 59. For disciplines, it is assumed that NPCs have a number of discipline dots equal to the square root of their age. (So a 100 year old vampire would have √100 = 10 discipline dots. A 64 years old vampire would have √64 = 8 discipline dots etc.)

Starting Discipline Points in Dark Ages: 4 (implied age of 16 years as a starting vampire).

The average discpline dot in a clan discipline (disregarding elder powers of level 6+) costs 16 XP (10+10+15+20+25/5 = 16). The average discipline dot in an out-of-clan discipline under the same parameters costs 20.4 XP. As the official guidelines don't weigh between clan disciplines and out-of-clan discpilines I have simply taken the average and rounded it up, to 19 XP (to account for blood magic with the extra costs of rituals and secondary paths, and for the more expensive elder powers).

There is a substantial XP difference between maximizing a single discipline with four dots (55 XP) and spreading discipline dots out as far as possible with 2/1/1 dots (40XP). To make up for it, player characters start with a number of DXP depending on their initial discipline spread:

  • 4/0/0: 0 DXP
  • 3/1/0: 10 DXP
  • 2/2/0: 15 DXP
  • 2/1/1: 15 DXP
